Halloween and Other Stuff!

Hey friends! I thought I would give an update of the events that happened last week. So, since Monday was Halloween, we teachers decided to give the kids a little break and play with them the entire morning! We set up a room for the kids to get their faces painted, a room for balloon coloring, and in the last classroom was a place for them to watch a Halloween movie. I was stationed at the face painting and I loved it! These kids looked awesome! I started out painting small things like bats and butterflies on their cheeks, but eventually it turned into a full face painting of tigers,cats, lions, and spiders. It was so great! I was pretty surprised to see that the Chinese teachers were actually having fun with the kids... they are usually very strict. You don't mess with the Chinese teachers. ;) The American teachers and I didn't really have much planned for Halloween so we all kind of just did our own thing. Em and I decided to go hit up the dumpling restaurant to get some Gua Ba Row, which is this super delicious sweet tempura pork. MMMMMMMmmmmmmm! I love it! I'm gonna have to figure out how to make it when I get home so I can make it for everybody! It's awesome! Anyway, after we got our dinner we walked around and were kind of weirded out because we were told that the Chinese celebrate Halloween in Weihai, but it sure didn't seem like it. It was just a totally normal night at the market. NBD. So, Halloween was fun that morning, but we ended up just having a pretty chill night. The next day was turned into an extension of the Halloween merriment because when we got to the school there were probably around 70 pumpkins left on our supply room table. We figured we better use them, so we set up big tables and helped the kids carve the pumpkins and color them. The kids LOVED the pumpkins... probably too much because they started getting really rambunctious. I can say that day wasn't as fun for me as the day before, but the pumpkins ended up looking awesome and the kids had a really good time. Later in the week Cami, Jillian, Em, Abby, and I went over to city center or "Big World" as we all call it and had a great time wandering around the markets. It was dumping rain profusely while we were walking around. I'm grateful that I remembered to bring my umbrella with me that day, because I wouldn't have survived! :P It was pretty bad, but we still had a lot of fun over there. There is this "mall" type of place you can go at Big World, but it's pretty much just an indoor market where they sell loads of random things. I've bought chopsticks, winter gloves, necklaces, Chinese relics and a bunch of other things there. It's cool because everything is already so cheap, but if you don't have enough money to get something a lot of the time they will just let you buy it anyway. It's really nice. After about an hour and a half of shopping we decided to get some lunch. We were heading out of the store and Em and I saw this underground food market that we made the mistake of walking through one time and told everyone to avoid it. It basically looks like an alley where people sell meat and fish, but they have live animals down there and it just reeks like blood and filth. Horrible, horrible experience! Anywho... we continued on our way to get some food. One of my friends, Jillian told us about this little cart that sells these wrap-like things for only 4 yuan. We headed over there and she grabbed one of those. I've been a little hesitant to eat street food, but she let me try it and it was really good! It basically was a fresh tortilla with egg, lettuce, meat, and this brown sauce. Super good! Nobody else seemed to want that though, so we hit up McDonald's after we went there. Once again...In America I've never been a McDonald's fan, but here it really is the greatest thing in the world! After we all ate we decided to head back home. It took about 40 minutes for the bus to come pick us up, but we kept busy talking about our Chinese names. My Chinese name is Kǎitè (pronounced Khy-chua) which means triumphant and special. Pretty cool I guess... It also can mean victorious secret agent, but whatever. Haha! Once we got on the bus, my friend Cami met this lady who had horrible English, but was determined to talk to her. The lady managed to ask what her name was and Cami told her. The lady asked her again what her name was. Again, Cami told her what her name was... this went on through out most of the bus ride. Finally, the lady asked if she knew the song My heart will go on. We all said yes. The lady then asked us if we would sing for her. Now, something you need to know is Cami isn't one to step out on an opportunity like that, so she definitely said yes. Once we found the song on Em's Ipod we all just went for it and started belting Celine Dion so loud that everyone on the bus could enjoy the performance. It was epic! People were smiling, laughing, and clapping along. It was a proud moment for all of us. Once that song was over, we decided to give the people of Weihai one more musical treat. Of course, it had to be Justin Bieber's Baby. Once we popped that song out I think it freaked most of the bus riders out. And of course the rapping part! That was a joke! I thought one of the Chinese ladies eyeballs were gonna fall out of her head! She thought we all were crazy! I guess J. Biebs is just to advanced for the Chinese. Oh well... It was fun while it lasted! Well, this week was fun! Not a whole lot happened, but we still had a good time! Well, I gotta go! I'll write more later! Loves!

Wǒ ài zhōngguó!

So, I don't know who's gonna be reading my blog... but whatever! If you want to read it, feel free... if not, then I suggest you stop reading now! :P Well, tons of stuff has happened through out the last two months of my life! I think when I first got to China I was trying to keep it together, but was freaking out inside because it smells SO bad here... like poo, pee, fish, rotting flesh, and cigarettes all combined together. On top of the smell it was really hot and humid so that made it that much more pleasant. ;) I figured that there wasn't really anything I could do about the smell, so I just pretty much had to suck it up. We were then introduced to the school and I was shocked by the size! It is enormous! I was thinking we were going to be in this small elementary school, but I came to find out that this was the school for elementary, jr. high, and high school kids. These kids basically go to school here there entire life! I know if I had to go to school at the same place for that long that I would run away! Ugh! Their school schedules are so intense here too! These kids have class from 7:15am until 9:00pm!!! It's insane! I'm grateful that I don't have to teach that long! I teach Mon.-Fri. from 8am-11:30am and on Wednesdays, Em and I teach English Corner for a hour in the afternoon. Ok, I seriously love these kids, but teaching them is probably one of the hardest things I've ever done! Just imagine trying to teach a bunch of deaf kids how to speak English.... That's pretty much what we try to do here. The kids really do work hard, but they get distracted pretty easily and a lot of them fight with each other. It's a constant battle.... but, I really do love these kids! When a bunch of my group went to Shanghai for a week long vacation, so many of us missed our kids so much! When we got back our kids were so happy to see us! They literally all tackled us with hugs! I almost fell over! That whole day of teaching was wonderful! I don't think they ever behaved so well! Too bad that didn't last long! ;)
Well, I've been able to do quite a few things here in China! Some things we've done has been traveling, which has been really fun! We had only been here a couple weeks when we were able to go on our first vacation... It was pretty much just a long weekend, but we made the most of it! We hired a tour to take us to Beijing. The bus ride there was SO long!!! It would have been the equivalent of  driving from central Utah to Southern California, but it took us about 3 hours extra to get there because we drove at night and China has a law where you cannot be on the roads between 2-5am. Ugh! So, our bus driver pulled over and we had to just sit in the bus and wait. I tried to sleep, but the bus and I don't get along so well. Finally, we got to Beijing and we were praying we could go to the hotel, but the tour guide people wouldn't let us go there... so we had to just stay in our crappy condition and walk everywhere until 3 pm. It was fine though because it was raining so hard that no one could tell that we were totally exhausted and dirty. :P We got to see Tienanmen Square and the Forbidden City! The square was cool! There were a bunch of soldiers walking around and they do a flag ceremony. The Forbidden City was incredible! It is huge and there are tons of guardians and statues all over the place. From afar the buildings looks really cool, but the closer you get the better they look because they have tons of intricate detail on everything! It's very beautiful! I only wish that it was better weather that day. It was so rainy it was hard to see everything and also to get good pictures. Oh well... not much I could do, again. After they took us there we got lunch at some super ghetto restaurant. It makes me laugh because our tour guides kept telling us that they were going to take us to a bunch of really nice Chinese restaurants, but everywhere we went was WAY ghetto and the food was always exactly the same. Rice, rolls, and a bunch of boiled stuff. We finally got so sick of that food that we ended up protesting! We said take us to McDonalds or take us home! :P Just kidding... not really, but pretty much. haha! So, they ended up dropping us off at the Hotel and we just ended up going to some mall place and eating there. Seriously, shopping here is the greatest thing I ever!! It is so much fun because you get to barter with the sales people! It took most of us a while to figure out how to do it the right way, but once we got it it was so awesome because you could get stuff for ridiculously cheap! I think I got over 20 different things in Beijing that if I had gotten it at home would have spent three or four hundred dollars on combined, but I got all of it for about seventy. I was stoked! It really is so much fun because the people get so mad at you when you tell them to go lower, but the harder you play the better the results! I got a 100% long silk robe for only $8 when the lady wanted almost $400 for it. It really is awesome! Anyway, the next day we were able to go to the Great Wall, which was incredible! I thought it was pretty cool too because it was 9/11 that day. We also hit up the Summer Palace, the Olympic Stadium, and the Temple of Heaven while we were there! All of it was amazing! When we had our second vacation, we had a lot more time off, so we flew to Shanghai and stayed at a really cool hostel. It was super cheap! Only 50 bucks for 8 nights. The most expensive thing that we had to buy there was food though. We would eat Muslim Chinese food a lot though because they give you a ton of food and it's really inexpensive. But, I'm  not gonna lie, I hit up McDonald's a few times while we were there. I've never been a fan before in my life, but here it is pretty much the greatest thing I've ever tasted! Hahaha! We could also eat in the lounge at the Hostel, but that was probably the most expensive place to eat... and I tried to avoid that area after the first couple of days we were there because I met a couple of guys and one of them turned out to be a stalker. Fun! Anyway, while we were in Shanghai we mostly shopped because it really is so addictive and fun to do! I got quite a few things for some of my friends and my family. My favorite thing that we have done so far though, was going to the water village! I absolutely loved that place! It's beautiful, crazy, and is kind of like how I expected China to be. It's very oriental and there are these gorgeous boats tours you can go on. We actually met this old man from Amsterdam and he came and hung out with us the entire day at the water village. I felt like I was hanging out with my Grandpa! He was so nice! He paid for our boat ride, our lunch, and later on, bought us all a bunch of bananas! Good man! Hahaha! Well, Shanghai was really fun... There were a few other things that we did, like going to a history museum, the Hershey's store, a Chinese Catholic cathedral, and the Shanghai civilized park. I seriously love Shanghai! There is so much to do there and things to see! If I ever come back to China, I want to stay in Shanghai!
Well, that's all we've done for vacations so far. I think we'll have another one in November for Thanksgiving, but I don't know where we are gonna go for this one. We have a little bit of time to plan something though. I honestly wouldn't mind staying in Weihai. It's a lot bigger than I imagined it to be and we've only seen a small part of it. I want to see all of it because I really am beginning to love this place. It's extremely different than anywhere I've ever been and even though the language barrier is pretty frustrating, it's just cool to see how these people live and get by day to day. The Chinese are very dedicated to work and very little to play, so they don't really know how to take a bunch of crazy American's who are constantly looking for a good time. It is pretty weird walking the streets because they really think that we are celebrities. They are always hollering at us, trying to take pictures with us, or forcing their children to say "hello". It's flattering when it happens (most of the time), so we just kind of go along with it.
Anyway, I'm sorry for the novel. That's my fault for
not writing consistently, so, I'm sorry and I will try to do better. I have more stories to tell, but I'll have to add them in some other posts because I gotta go! I'll write more later! Loves! :)

Do I wish that I lived at Hogwarts?.... yes... yes I do.

Ok, ok... don't make fun!! Seriously though!! How sweet would it be to live in a castle in England with all of your friends and you have magical powers??? I think it would be freaking sweet! ;) Oh my gosh! I'm so excited for the first part of Harry Potter 7 the movie to come out!! That is basically my favorite book of all time, so I'm guessing it will probably be my favorite movie of all time!! I don't know though... it's gonna have to be dang good! ok..... I'm done mushing about Harry Potter now. :)  So, this weekend has been really nice! I was actually able to chill for the last couple of days because of GENERAL CONFERENCE!!! I love GC! It really is my favorite time of year! Not only because of GC, but because it's fall!! I LOVE fall!! Just the smell in the air and the colors of the leaves on the trees. Also, I love pumpkins! I don't think I know one person who doesn't like pumpkins! They look so great and I took the liberty to turn a pumpkin into a glitter pumpkin or a "disco ball" as my dad calls it. It looks really cool and it makes the whole room light up! Definitely a good craft to do if you are bored. Well... I know it's random that I decided to start blogging again, but I figured what the heck! Ok, well... I'll try to write later! No promises, though! :P

Uhhhhh.... stress?? What stress??

Who knew that life could possibly get this crazy? I sure didn't. Ok, so a little over a week ago I went to Bonney Lake, Washington to visit some of my relatives... which didn't really turn out how I expected it too. I don't really know what I was expecting though, so I guess it doesn't really even matter, but all in all it was good to visit and see them. Trying to get home though was really exhausting because my flight was delayed and once I got on the plane I got stuck sitting next to a screaming toddler, oh and there was a lot of turbulence (which scares the heck out of me!). At least I was able to read about ten chapters of Pride and Prejudice! Ya! I have seriously been trying to read this book for about 3 years, but I keep getting distracted! I'm gonna finish it! haha! SO.... anyways, I got home and was SUPER happy about it! And the next day was Carly's birthday so that was exciting, but I had to get up, go to work and do everything as I usually do, but I had some feeling that something was going to happen... and sure enough, I came home and saw that Car had been proposed to while I was at work! So, I was way happy to find out about that! oh, and her ring is gorgeous! (good job Logan! :) ) Oh! I forgot! My mom had pretty intense surgery too... so she wasn't feeling to good, but she's doing better now! Ok.... what do I have so far? Washington, Mom's surgery, Car's Birthday and engagement.... then we had Collin's birthday... oh ya... Kyle bought a car.... hmmmm. Oh... and I'm not going back to school this semester. brilliant! not. Oh well. So, ya.... I'm sure that there is plenty more. Kyle's birthday is coming up this weekend, but I'm not sure if he's even gonna be home for it, so we'll probably have a party for him on Monday. Bahh! Too much stuff! I know that you all think I'm insane, but it's ok! I don't care! That is how it's done! Ok... I gotta go, but I'll write more later! :)

That's what I thought!

So.... this blogging thing is harder to find time for than I thought it would be, but it's ok... I'm going to keep it up as much as I can! So, there has been a lot going on since I last wrote and that is probably why I haven't been as faithful to this as I thought I could be, but anyways my fam, friends and I have all been having a lot of fun! I have been to campfires, parties, lagoon, movies, the lake boating and a whole ton of other stuff! I finally feel like I am having a summer! Yay! Oh, and my sister Carly just got back yesterday from Hawaii! Man, I was just green with jealous rage! jk :) I want to go to Hawaii way bad though!!! That would be so sweet!! So, Carly totally loaded us up with tons of stuff ! She got us necklaces, shirts, locals flip flops, chocolate, and cute window stickers! She is so great! She seemed to have had a really good time! Well, I can't say that I have had as much fun as going to Hawaii, but it has been so much fun to spend time with friends and family! I love them all very much! Oh, and I saw Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince! I LOVED it!! They didn't stay 100% accurate with the book... and it kinda bugged me the first time I watched it, so, I decided to go see it again and it was sooooooooo much better! I've kinda thrown out the books when it comes to the movies now because it's almost impossible for them to film it word for word. Ugh, could you imagine watching a Harry Potter movie that was exactly like the book?! It would be 15 hours long!! Ew... no thanks! anyways... I really think it was the best movie out of all of them and now I am so excited for the last movies to come out! Wow, they are almost done with all the movies! Crazy!!! Well, I think I'm gonna peace.... I'll write to you later!

I'm tired...

So... today.... what did I do? I worked, then came home and slept! I wasn't going too... I was actually quite turned off by that idea, but I did and ended up sleeping for three hours. oops! Oh well...tonight turned out to be pretty fun! We ( as in Candice, Kyle and I) had a few friends come over and we watched the movie Knowing. Pretty sure I didn't get any of it.... probably because everyone was making fun of it the whole time.... (spoiler alert!) and by the time it was over, I felt so sad because everyone dies in the end. Oh, and it's about aliens. Right. Anyways, it turned out to be funny because my brother Kyle is the King of making depressing movies become ridiculous and halarious... so ya, for the rest of the night we quoted funny movies and shows! I loved it! It seems that those nights are the best! Well, I'm pretty tired, even though I did take a nap today... so, I'm going to bed! Goodnight!

Smile.... it's Sunday!

Don't you love when you have an oppurtunity to sleep in?! I know I do! I think all the stress and craziness that went on last week really wore out me and my family! I slept in until about 10:30 a.m. this morning and it was AMAZING! I was so grateful for it! Anyways, today was a really good day to think about things that are important to me. I pondered for quite a while about a lot of things and I wanted to prioritized some of the things that are an important part of my life.... so here is my top ten list.

1. Heavenly Father & Jesus Christ
2. My testimony
3. My family and the relationship I have with them
4. My friends
5. My education...(there is a long story involved with this one)
6. My health
7. My goals with work
8. Being happy and loving to those around me
9. Being kind towards all of God's creations
10. To find ways to serve others.


So, there you have it! These things are truly important to me and I hope that no matter what I will always keep my priorities in order! That seems to make my life easier when I am doing things the right way and focusing on what's most important! oh, and number 5... I will let you know about that one later when I am not so tired!
